Frequently asked questions

To demystify the process, here are some frequently asked questions:

What is therapy?

Typically, therapy consists of weekly sessions that are scheduled for a recurring time. It is a collaborative experience based on the professional relationship between the client and therapist.

Why do people come to therapy?

People come to therapy for a variety of reasons. Some examples include: enhancing quality of life, managing a difficult life event or transition, overcoming trauma, increasing self-understanding, reducing symptoms and managing uncomfortable emotions, exploring one’s identity and aspirations, increasing balance, and improving relationships with oneself and others.

While therapy is helpful to manage crises and examine longstanding, deep issues, you do not need to be experiencing acute distress to benefit from therapy.

What will happen in therapy?

The first three or so sessions are consultation sessions, which provides us with an opportunity to really get to know each other and for you to determine if I am a good fit for your needs. These sessions may include an assessment of your primary concern(s) and any symptoms you may be experiencing, as well as a discussion your background and relevant history. You will have the opportunity to ask any questions on your mind. If we determine that I am a good fit for you, then we will collaboratively identify therapy goals and areas of focus.

Because each individual is unique and also has different concerns and goals, therapy will look different for each person. Therapy may include: discussing past events or exploring present stressors and concerns; processing emotions; identifying the relationship between behaviors, thoughts, and emotions; learning healthy coping skills; identifying and modifying patterns that interfere with your quality of life or relationships; or exploring your values and identifying ways to live consistently with them. Of upmost importance is that, the more you put into therapy, the more you will get out of it.

How long does therapy last?

The length of therapy varies based on your needs. It can range from a few sessions to manage a specific concern or longer-term to target more difficult patterns or for an opportunity for deeper growth. A common length for many is 6 months.
